Physicochemical properties of molybdenum alloys

Apr 19, 2026|

Molybdenum alloys, as refractory metals, have an operating temperature range of 1100℃ to 3320℃. They possess advantages such as low density, low coefficient of thermal expansion, high elastic modulus, good high-temperature creep resistance, and weldability. However, they weaken at low temperatures and exhibit severe oxidation at high temperatures.

Among all alloying elements, only rhenium (Re) positively affects the low-temperature plasticity of molybdenum. Adding 5% to 50% Re can improve the low-temperature plasticity, strength, and weldability of molybdenum alloys, reduce brittleness after recrystallization, and enhance thermal shock resistance. Molybdenum alloys are less prone to embrittlement under vacuum or inert gas conditions.
