Optical Fiber RFQ Checklist: What Buyers Should Specify to Get an Accurate Quote

Oct 12, 2026|

When requesting an optical fiber quotation, a product name alone is rarely enough to establish a complete purchasing specification. Fiber type, optical performance, order quantity, delivery destination and packaging requirements can all affect the scope of a quotation.

Recent network investment announcements reinforce the importance of procurement planning. On September 29, 2026, Reuters reported that AT&T had announced a multi-year agreement exceeding $3 billion with Corning for fiber and cable to support network expansion. This is evidence of investment in a specific infrastructure program, not proof of a universal fiber shortage or longer lead times across the market.

For cable manufacturers, FTTH contractors, importers, distributors and network procurement teams, the practical response is to define the required specifications, quantities and delivery conditions before placing an order.

What this guide helps you do:
  • Prepare a complete optical fiber RFQ.
  • Identify technical details that still need confirmation.
  • Explain your application when the fiber grade has not been finalized.
  • Distinguish sample requests, trial orders and bulk purchases.
  • Send a clear inquiry that a supplier can review against your requirements.

1. Optical Fiber RFQ Checklist: What Should You Specify?

Use the checklist below before contacting an optical fiber supplier. If a parameter has not been finalized, mark it as "To be confirmed" rather than assuming a standard value.

RFQ Field What to Provide Why It Matters
Fiber Type / Grade G.657.A1, G.657.A2, G.652.D or another specified fiber type Identifies the product category to be quoted.
Application FTTH, indoor access cable, cable manufacturing or another intended use Helps establish the relevant optical, mechanical and installation requirements.
Required Technical Specification Applicable ITU-T or IEC recommendation, edition and project-specific limits Prevents a product name from being mistaken for a complete purchasing specification.
Operating Wavelength Required wavelengths, such as 1310 nm or 1550 nm, plus any additional test wavelengths Ensures optical performance is reviewed at the relevant wavelengths.
Attenuation Requirements Maximum attenuation in dB/km at the specified wavelengths Allows the supplier to check the requested optical performance against the applicable product datasheet.
Bend Radius Requirements Minimum design radius and test conditions, if applicable Helps determine whether the selected fiber and finished cable design suit the intended routing conditions.
Compatibility Requirements G.652.D compatibility, existing network requirements, splicing or interconnection conditions Reduces the risk of selecting a fiber that does not fit the intended network or cable design.
Sample or Bulk Quantity Sample length, trial quantity, initial order quantity and expected recurring demand Helps define the appropriate supply scope and purchasing stage.
Required Delivery Date Target arrival date and required shipment date, if different Gives the supplier a schedule to review rather than an undefined request for urgent delivery.
Destination Country Country, delivery city or port, and preferred shipping terms if known Supports review of the appropriate logistics and quotation scope.
Packaging / Spool Requirements Spool type, fiber length per spool, labeling and packing instructions Helps ensure the delivery format fits the buyer's handling and production process.
Required Technical Documents Datasheet, test report, certificate of conformity or other specified documents Clarifies documentation expectations before the order is confirmed.

Why Missing Information Matters

A missing fiber grade may require technical clarification before the supplier can identify the appropriate product. Without attenuation limits or test wavelengths, the required optical performance may remain ambiguous.

An unspecified spool length can also make quotations difficult to compare on an equivalent supply basis. Likewise, a target delivery date without a destination or a distinction between dispatch and arrival may not provide enough information for a meaningful schedule review.

A useful RFQ does not need to contain every engineering detail on day one. It should clearly distinguish confirmed requirements from open questions so the supplier can respond without guessing.

2. How to Confirm G.657.A1 vs. G.657.A2

If your project requires bend-insensitive single-mode fiber but the grade has not been selected, provide the actual routing conditions instead of choosing a grade based on its name alone.

Start With the Actual Design Conditions

Under ITU-T G.657, the reference minimum design radius is 10 mm for G.657.A1 and 7.5 mm for G.657.A2. These are design-category specifications, not universal installation instructions for every finished cable, enclosure or operating condition.

The final selection must consider the applicable recommendation and edition, bend-loss test conditions, cable construction, installation method and project-specific requirements. A finished cable may have additional mechanical limits that must be observed even when its fiber is classified as A1 or A2.

Before requesting a quotation, confirm:
  • The smallest bend radius required by the cable drawing or installation design.
  • Whether the requirement applies to bare fiber, buffered fiber or the finished cable.
  • The test wavelength, number of turns and allowable additional bending loss, if specified.
  • Any G.652.D compatibility, splicing or network-operator requirements.
  • The applicable standard edition and project acceptance criteria.
If these details are unavailable, ask the supplier to identify which parameters still require confirmation. The proposed grade and its performance limits should be confirmed against the applicable product specification before purchase.

For product-specific reference, review G.657.A1 Fiber, G.657.A2 Fiber and Bend-Insensitive Optical Fiber.

3. Distinguish Sample, Trial and Bulk Orders

Sample Inquiry

State the required quantity or length, intended test or cable application, and the technical parameters that must be verified. Ask the supplier to confirm sample availability, applicable costs and delivery arrangements. Do not assume that samples are free or immediately available.

Trial or Qualification Order

Specify the pilot quantity, intended production process, acceptance criteria and required test documentation. If the trial must match a future bulk order, identify the specification that the production order will follow.

Bulk Optical Fiber Order

Provide the total quantity, preferred length per spool, packaging configuration, destination and target schedule. For repeat orders, include forecast demand or proposed delivery batches where possible. Ask the supplier to clarify whether the quotation covers the full quantity or split shipments.

These distinctions help both parties evaluate the correct supply scope without treating a small qualification request as a production order.

4. Two Practical Optical Fiber RFQ Scenarios

Scenario A: The Fiber Grade Is Already Confirmed

A cable manufacturer has an approved G.657.A1 specification and needs fiber for an upcoming production run.

The RFQ should include the grade, applicable standard edition, attenuation limits, relevant bend-performance criteria, required quantity, spool configuration, destination and target delivery date. Attach the approved specification or datasheet if available.

The supplier can then review the requested product against the stated requirements and identify any unresolved commercial, technical or delivery conditions.

Scenario B: The Fiber Grade Has Not Been Finalized

An FTTH contractor is preparing an indoor access-network project but has not decided between G.657.A1 and G.657.A2.

Instead of requesting an arbitrary grade, provide the intended cable structure, installation environment, minimum routing radius, relevant wavelengths, optical-loss limits and network compatibility requirements. Include the expected quantity and project schedule.

The supplier can review the information and identify a suitable specification for further confirmation. Any recommendation remains subject to the applicable product datasheet, system requirements and project acceptance criteria.

6. Request an Optical Fiber Quotation

A useful quotation begins with a clearly defined requirement, not simply a product name. Confirming the fiber grade, optical performance, quantity, delivery destination and packaging requirements helps both the buyer and supplier identify open issues before the order is finalized.
