Three Issues That Must Be Confirmed Before Purchasing Titanium Alloy Components
Jun 15, 2026|
The person in charge of selecting or purchasing the titanium components for chemical plants must pay attention to this matter. It is closely related to you personally - not because "titanium is corrosion-resistant, so it must be bought", but because choosing the wrong grade or purchasing titanium materials of unknown origin is often the responsibility of the process engineer or equipment supervisor who signs off on the purchase.
Don't listen to the salespeople's hype that industrial pure titanium TA2 is a universal cure-all. In the chemical plant environment, there are three fatal areas: First, when used in the gap of wet chlorine gas flanges, it will cause gap corrosion and absorb hydrogen to become brittle, and many chlorine alkali plants have thus bulged and cracked, resulting in irreparable accidents; Second, when encountering acidic and salty evaporation crystallization conditions, if TA2 is substituted for the design requirement of TA10, the tube bundle will perforate within three years; The most terrifying is when encountering dry chlorine gas with a moisture content of less than 0.5%, titanium will burn violently and even explode like gunpowder. No one in the industry will deliberately point out these dangerous areas to you - the salespeople just want to sell goods, and the design institute uses the usual old drawings. If the equipment explodes or stops production, the one who signs and takes the blame is usually the person responsible for selection and procurement.
You are very likely to step into the three tacit traps in the industry. One is passing off inferior goods: traders use non-standard billets melted from recycled materials to pretend to be ASTM B265/B338 standard titanium plates and tubes. The iron oxide impurities exceed the standard, but there is no difference in appearance, but the corrosion resistance in the chloride ion environment drops sharply, and the tube will perforate and leak within half a year. We once had a customer's plate heat exchanger in a chemical plant that failed due to gap corrosion and hydrogen absorption, resulting in blistering and cracking within six months. Another is fake material certificates: the MTC (material certificate) of a regular manufacturer is modified with the furnace number and date, and this batch has no ultrasonic inspection report but attaches a qualified report from another batch. The supervisor passes it by without any suspicion. After operation, there is no way to trace the problem. The most abominable is mixed shipment: "Top-quality goods cover the bottom". The top layer is the qualified sample, and the bottom layer is non-standard thin-walled or impurity-exceeding materials. Only by checking the upper layer can you not find any problems. These insider secrets are very common in low-price winning projects. It is too late to investigate when something goes wrong.

This will directly affect your project - unplanned shutdowns, safety and environmental accidents, EPC performance breaches. Our chemical plant customer in Shanghai, before cooperating with us, had gap corrosion and hydrogen absorption in the flange gap of the wet chlorine cooling tube, resulting in blistering and cracking of the titanium tube wall and leakage and shutdown within one year; Another customer's manufacturer had titanium equipment in a high-temperature halogenated acetic acid system fracture due to hydrogen embrittlement caused by hydrogen evolution of the medium; The 316L heat exchange tubes used in the PTA plant perforated in a medium containing Br⁻ after 18 months, and after replacing with TA2 titanium tubes, it became stable. Once the titanium components of the chemical plant fail, it is not just a replacement - the leakage of the medium may trigger safety and environmental accountability, and the delay in delivery time triggers EPC penalty.
Who will take the blame in the end? Audit the signature records and check the material does not meet the design requirements, no batch traceable MTC, and not conducting UT/ET inspection as per standards - the responsibility lies with the equipment supervisor or procurement manager. The way to avoid it is: insist on using the original factory batch MTC and third-party UT/ET inspection reports, refuse to use other batches of reports; require the supplier to confirm the compatibility of the brand with the working conditions (TA2 for oxidizing/sea water/climate alkali, TA9/Gr.7 for gap risks in wet chlorine gas, TA10/Gr.12 for reducing acid + Cl⁻ high temperature, TC4/Gr.5 for high-strength pressure-bearing); the contract should state full compensation for material non-compliance and joint compensation for delivery period.

China Super Tech Co., Ltd. specializes in the full range of titanium and titanium alloys for chemical plants (TA1/Gr.1 to TC4/Gr.5), with a large stock - titanium plates (ASTM B265), titanium tubes (B338), titanium rods (B348), forgings, flanges, pipe fittings, fasteners, and titanium-steel composite plates, with complete specifications and materials. Each batch of goods comes with a genuine factory MTC and optional third-party inspection reports (UT/ET/PT), supporting traceability for factory inspection. Standard products are dispatched quickly for emergency use. Non-standard products are customized and processed according to the drawings (such as fixed-length cutting, beveling, acid washing and passivation). They meet multiple standards such as ASME/ASTM/GB/DIN/JIS. We do not engage in the game of selling inferior products at low prices - we only provide regular titanium materials that are traceable, verifiable and exempt from liability. We help you eliminate the risks of material selection and supply chain.
Please send us the working conditions, media, temperature, pressure, required standards and specifications. The technical team of China Super Tech will free of charge assist in verifying the applicability of the grade and provide feedback on inventory and quotations.
