The Niobium Tungsten Alloy supplied by China Super Tech Co., Ltd. is a refractory metal alloy with niobium as the base material and tungsten as the core strengthening element. It also contains trace elements such as zirconium (Zr) and hafnium (Hf). Compared to pure tungsten, it has a lower density, superior high-temperature strength, and the transition temperature between plasticity and brittleness can be reduced to below -129°C. The product is manufactured through electron beam melting and extrusion forging processes, with uniform composition and fine grains. It is widely used in high-end fields such as aerospace, nuclear industry, and medical care.

Product features

1.Low density, high strength - The key material for reducing weight in aerospace

The density of niobium is only 8.57 g/cm³, which is much lower than that of tungsten at 19.25 g/cm³. The alloy with niobium as the base can maintain sufficient strength while reducing the overall weight by more than 30%. This is why the skin of the space shuttle and the rocket nozzle choose niobium instead of pure tungsten.

 

2. Low-temperature non-crystalline - The transition temperature between plasticity and brittleness is as low as -129°C.

Ordinary niobium alloys are prone to cracking at low temperatures. By adding a combination of 0.1% carbon and 1% zirconium (Nb-10W-1Zr-0.1C grade), we have reduced the transition temperature between plasticity and brittleness to below -129°C, ensuring stability in extreme temperature differences.

 

3. High-temperature oxidation resistance - Optional Cr-Ti-Si anti-oxidation coating

The niobium tungsten alloy will oxidize above 1000°C. We offer a Cr-Ti-Si composite coating solution. In a static environment of 1700°C, the anti-oxidation life can reach 50 hours, meeting the requirements of extreme scenarios such as rocket engines.

1. Spacecraft Skin and Rocket Nozzle

During the launch phase, spacecraft have to withstand extreme temperature variations and aerodynamic heating. The niobium-tungsten alloy skin can maintain its size stability within the temperature range of -180°C to 2000°C. The protective cover of Chang'e-3 was made of this type of alloy material because only it could meet both the tough requirements of withstanding high temperatures and reducing weight simultaneously.

 

2. Nuclear Reactors and Space Power Systems

The extremely harsh environment inside a nuclear reactor, featuring high temperatures and intense radiation, imposes extremely strict requirements on materials. The low activation properties and high temperature stability of niobium-tungsten alloys make them the preferred choice for plasma-facing materials. The ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) is also evaluating such alloys.

 

3. Medical Radiation Shielding

The shielding components in hospital radiotherapy rooms were traditionally made of lead, but lead is toxic and can attenuate radiation. The radiation absorption capacity of niobium-tungsten alloy is 30% to 40% higher than that of lead, and it is non-toxic and environmentally friendly. It has been used in gamma knife collimators, CT room shielding walls, and other scenarios.

 

4. Precise counterweight components

Satellite gyro rotor, racing car balance weights, etc. require high-density and small-volume counterweights. The niobium-tungsten alloy has a density of approximately 8.8 g/cm³ and excellent machining performance. It can be machined through turning, milling and drilling, and easily fabricated into complex shapes.

1.Non-standard grade customization - Component precision reaches ppm level

Support adjustment of W/Zr/Hf/C ratios, and customize exclusive grades. We adopt a dual-control process of powder metallurgy pre-alloying and electron beam melting, with component control accuracy reaching ppm level. It is not a simple mixture of ingredients, but rather locks in component consistency from the source.

 

2. Full-process processing - Rod/Plate/Strip/Wire. The entire process is not outsourced.

From extrusion blanking to forging, rolling, and drawing, all four processes are completed on our own production lines without outsourcing or transferring. This means that we can precisely control the deformation amount and temperature at each step, and the uniformity of the product's structure and the dimensional accuracy are one level higher than the outsourcing solution.

 

3. Antioxidant Coating Processing - Own Production Line, With Measured Data

Offer two coating solutions: Cr-Ti-Si and Cr-Fe-Si. We have our own coating production line. The 1700°C/50h oxidation resistance life has been verified with measured data, not laboratory data, but deliverable engineering-level indicators.

 

4. Small batch rapid delivery - Finished products will be ready within the shortest 15 working days.

For regular grades, we maintain regular inventory and deliver upon order. For customized grades, from melting to finished products, it takes a maximum of 15 working days. We do not accept "any material, any job" type of orders. We focus on the niobium tungsten alloy production line, so both the delivery time and quality are controllable.

What are the differences between niobium-tungsten alloy and tungsten-nickel-iron (W-Ni-Fe) alloy?

The main difference lies in the base material. Tungsten-nickel-iron has tungsten as the base material, with a density of 17 to 18.5 g/cm³; the niobium-tungsten alloy has niobium as the base material, with a density of only about 8.8 g/cm³, which is half lighter. If your scenario requires both high temperature and weight reduction (such as in aerospace), choose the niobium-tungsten alloy; if you only need high density for counterweight (such as in armor-piercing core), the tungsten-nickel-iron is more suitable.

What shapes can your niobium-tungsten alloy be processed into? What is the minimum size?

Rods (Φ2 - 100mm), plates (thickness 0.2 - 50mm), strips, wires can all be produced. Customized non-standard special-shaped parts are supported with custom drawings, but it is recommended to provide 3D drawings for assessing the feasibility of the process.

Can it be used directly in high-temperature environments without an antioxidant coating?

It can withstand short-term (a few minutes) high-temperature shocks, such as during the instant of a rocket launch. However, if it is a working environment with temperatures above 1000°C continuously, a coating must be applied; otherwise, the oxidation rate will increase sharply. Our Cr-Ti-Si coating solution has been verified at 1700°C for 50 hours.

For custom grades, it takes approximately 15 working days from melting. For coated parts, an additional 5 to 7 working days are required.
